Once a week, make sure to clean your engagement ring. Some prefer to do it daily, but once a week is just fine. It might seem extensive, but there’s a good reason for the routine. Sweat and the body’s natural oils collect on the ring, tarnishing both the setting and the diamond. Sandwiches and other finger foods leave traces of grease and crumbs. It’s not always easy to see what’s on the ring.

Luckily, cleaning is much more simple than you might think. You only need four things: soap, water, a toothbrush, and a soft cloth.

DO IT YOURSELF

First, mix warm water and soap in a bowl. You do not need any fancy soap, just dish detergent or whatever you have lying around, but never use bleach. Let the ring sit in the soap mixture for 20-40 minutes. While you are sitting around, reflect on how beautiful your diamond is and how lucky you are to own such an exquisite object.

Afterward, give it a gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush to make sure it’s clean and debris-free. It’s worth emphasizing the softer bristles, as more prickly toothbrushes can scratch softer metals like yellow gold. Finally, dry it with a soft microfiber cloth. Paper towels and other abrasive drying devices are not ideal, so fetch a terry cloth. Now, slip the ring back on and smile at its shimmer and shine.

WHAT NOT TO DO

There are many cleaning options out there, but you should stick to Occam’s Razor: the simpler, the better. You probably do not need cleaning products like alcohol, degreaser, or anything else. Never use abrasive cleaners like baking soda, acetone, or toothpaste. It could scratch the setting and fade the diamond.

Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners are a high-tech solution, but not the best solution. They can cause gems to become loose and fall into the machine.
