CONSULT HER JEWELRY BOX

If your partner has a jewelry box, take a peek and see if there’s another ring from her collection you can take to your jeweler. Disclaimer: This only works if the ring is worn on a similarly sized finger, like the ring finger on her right hand, and is not a good idea if the ring is one she’s likely to realize is missing.

TRACING YOUR STEPS

One alternative to borrowing from a current collection is to trace a ring she already owns, rather than take it to your jeweler. To do this, carefully place the ring on a sheet of paper and trace both the inside and the outside of the ring.

Your jeweler can likely get a decent approximation of the correct size. You can also do this for several rings in her jewelry box so your jeweler can get an average, which is likely to ensure a ring that fits, even if it’s a hair too big and needs to be resized.

PHONE A FRIEND

Turn to someone you trust (and someone who won’t give the surprise away) to secretly find her ring size. Someone like her mom or best friend may already know the answer. Maybe they borrow accessories for example. If not, see if they’d be up for casually fishing around in a very nonchalant way. Have them take her shopping or make up a story that invites them to casually ask what size they’d wear.

If you really don’t want to ask, you can always pick an average size and plan to have it sized after the proposal. Just be sure to size up to ensure the ring slides onto her finger easily.
