  • Elapsed-Time (Diver’s) Bezel

The diver's bezel gained popularity in the 1950s when dive watches such as the first Rolex Submariner enabled divers to keep track of time while underwater.

At the zero marker, and with the minute hand rotating in a single direction, elapsed time can be read instantly; there can be no unintentional rotations in the opposite direction. Today, diving bezels are commonly used in timekeeping even in ordinary activities.

  • Tachymeter Bezel

By using a tachymetric bezel watch, one can measure speed and productivity, but it is usually paired with a stopwatch. One of the most notable versions of this type of tachymeter is found in the Omega Speedmaster watches, where the element has been moved from the dial to the tachymetric bezel, allowing for easier reading.

When you time how long it takes you to traverse a known distance, the tachymeter shows your speed directly on the watch's dial without any need for calculations. Since accuracy is based on a fixed scale, tachymeter bezels do not rotate.

Essentially, the GMT bezel was invented in order to provide a solution to a particular issue, which is keeping track of time in different time zones while a flight is taking place. The creation of the first real GMT watch can be traced back to the 1950s, when the very first pilots were equipped with the rotating 24-hour bezel to show both local and home time zones.

In previous models such as the earlier Rolex GMT-Master, two-colored bezels served a practical purpose: they depicted day and night hours. Contemporary GMT bezels still follow the same principle whereby users can monitor two or three time zones with the help of a rotating bezel in conjunction with the GMT hand.

  • Slide-Rule / Pilot’s Bezel

The slide rule bezel is known to be one of the most advanced bezels in terms of mechanical characteristics. This kind of watch bezel can be spotted on classic aviation watches. It operates as a device that allows the watch to be used as an analog calculator.

Aviation personnel employed the logarithmic scales on the dial and the bezel for computations on fuel use, velocity, distance, and conversions. While the digital age in aviation machinery began afterward, the slide-rule bezel is still fresh in the minds of collectors in this field.
